Sir, - I am writing to express my pleasure at Fintan O'Toole's article in the Weekend supplement of July 12th. Mr O'Toole displayed a perceptive and realistic view of the part played by Mr Haughey in Irish life and politics. I warmly welcome his honesty in dealing with the facts as they have been presented. The media have "done the state some service" in the fair and, in my opinion, unbiased reporting of the tribunal.
When Mr Haughey appeared at the tribunal, perhaps he should have used the words of another character from Othello. The menacing Iago said: "Reputation, reputation is an idle most false imposition, oft got without merit and lost without deserving." I await with interest Mr Haughey's next quote from the bard. Anyway, there are plenty of tragedies to choose from. - Yours, etc., COLIN McKEON,
Terenure,
