Sir, - I can't altogether agree with the headline over Peter Murtagh's article (July 12th) that Mr Charles Haughey "let down party and country and blame is his alone". It is interesting to see the distance being created by people who once supported him, voted him in as a TD, elected him as party leader, and served as Ministers with him in Cabinet.

Voters can choose whom they vote for, and TDs can choose whom they elect as party leader. Therefore, they are responsible for those they elect, and should be prepared to take some responsibility for the consequences. It has become a cliche to say that politicians are mirrors of society, but it is true.

I would like to see all those who supported Mr Haughey down the years and who know him well, especially in his party, come forward now to share some responsibility for what has been revealed at the tribunal of inquiry. They should not leave him alone in his darkest hour. - Yours, etc., DAVID HICKIE,
