Sir, – I note that the Metropolitan Police's "Partygate" investigation lasted 14 weeks and cost £460,000 ("UK police conclude Partygate investigation with 126 fixed-penalty notices", World, May 19th). Outrageous. Of course, had a similar investigation been conducted here, it would have lasted 14 years and cost perhaps €46 million. The upside of course would have been the creation of multiple millionaires among the legal profession and the inevitable conclusion that "lessons have been learned". – Yours, etc,
