A chara, – As noted in "Afforestation: a source of environmental damage and depopulation?" (Science, January 31st), Sitka spruce plantations are heavily subsidised and have a detrimental impact on our environment and ecology.
I’d like to add that they have a negative impact on tourism.
Tourists come to Ireland primarily for the landscape. They don’t want to encounter agri-forestry and a single shade of green. Bring back our native trees! – Yours, etc,
