Madam, - It was with a mixture of sadness and dismay that I learned that RTÉ Radio is to drop Tonight with Vincent Browne( The Irish Times, July 5th). Perhaps RTÉ's recent dealings with Beverley Flynn (or, dare I say, Fianna Fáil?) have convinced the national broadcaster that there is no longer a need for a show that so eloquently exposes the wrongdoings of those in power.

Madam, - I was very sorry to read of RTÉ's decision to end the Vincent Browne programme. I have gone to bed on many a night over the past few years to listen to the show. While it may not have acted as a sedative, it certainly entertained and often left me with a thought for the night.

Madam, - "My husband and I go to bed with Vincent Browne every night," a lady confided to me recently. Your report of the the dropping of his radio programme made grim reading for "Mad Dog's" devoted listeners. We are suddenly, brutally dispossessed. No more sighs of exasperation, no more inarticulate moments, no more of Vincent's cries for the redistribution of wealth; no more James Gogartys, no more opera interludes, no more of those novel, memorable items (among many, a visit some years ago to the enclosed Siena nuns in Drogheda comes to mind), etc, etc. As if this summer's weather was not enough to cope with!
- Yours, etc,
OLIVER McGRANE, Marley Avenue, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16.
