New Irish flag?

Sir, – One of your letter writers suggests a gold crown on the shoulder of a harp on the background of any new Irish flag to correspond to the “unionist northeast of the country”.

As someone who lives in the “northeast” and who isn’t “unionist” can I point out that the unionist population in this part of Ireland is veering towards less than 50 per cent. It would therefore be more correct to have half a crown placed over the harp, and as unionists were always more loyal to the half-crown than the Crown, this would be more than apposite.

– Yours, etc,

KIERAN MURPHY,
