New bank holiday?

Sir, – John Geraghty (Letters, July 15th) wrote about considering the possibility of a new bank holiday in September as a mark of appreciation to our young citizens. Perhaps it could be called a “thank holiday”? – Yours, etc,

PETER MADDEN,

Bandon, Co Cork.

A chara, – Ronan Scanlon (Letters, July 16th) objects to a new bank holiday in September, suggesting bank holidays should be replaced by four discretionary annual leave days.

Annual leave is always at the discretion of the employer, albeit bearing in mind family and personal circumstances. A bank holiday allows the majority of people to spend that time with loved ones, and to plan well in advance to do so. Those good souls who, by virtue of their employment, are obliged to work bank holidays, receive, under law, a premium for such work. – Yours, etc,

PAT QUINN,

Dublin 8.
