Naming a decade

Madam, – What is it about counting between one and 10 that is so difficult – not least for RTÉ and some of its eminent broadcasters? One wonders if they may be numerically challenged, or just ignorant of the Gregorian Calendar.

Unless I am missing something, a decade is a period of 10 years. The current decade began on January 1st, 2001 (as did the 21st century – not January 1st, 2000) and ends a full 10 years later on December 31st, 2010, so we have another year to go to the start of the next decade. What a joy, another 12 months of maudlin reminiscences! I wonder if it might occur to people to question why we had a census in 1821, 1841, 1851, 1901, 1911 etc: the first year of their respective decades perhaps?

Have we not been robbed enough of late, without having 12 months stolen from us? Maybe it is just a further case of creative accounting! – Yours, etc,
