Ministers and gender equality

A chara, – Ivor Shorts (June 24th), like many other commentators this week, is adamant that gender should not be a factor in the selection of Cabinet members.

I hope that there are some excellent Ministers chosen on the grounds of ability. But, as we all know, most of the Cabinet are average men chosen for their friendship with the Taoiseach, their support for his leadership bid or for reasons of geography. Heaven forbid that an average woman should be selected on the flimsy grounds that she might be more representative of half the population. – Is mise,
