STANLEY A. SIEV,
Madam, - Compliments to Michael Kennefick (December 3rd) for his positive comments. Back in the 1940s Prof Frances Moran of TCD observed during lectures that use of language determined the true culture, vocabulary capability and ethical principles of the speakers concerned.
In the 1960s the late District Justice O'Hagan remarked from the bench during a case in which foul language was used: "I shudder to think that the day will come when foul language will be used constantly in the dining-rooms and drawing-rooms of ladies and gentlemen".
Today his prophesy has come true and coarse, foul and inappropriate and explicit language is constantly heard from all classes of society and from the radio and TV.
It is time for our media to lead in correct conduct and not direct us downwards like dregs of society. - Yours, etc.,
STANLEY A. SIEV, Aungier Street, Dublin 2.
