A chara, – I was delighted to read Olivia Kelly's report on the planned restoration of the Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park ("Hold the fort: Phoenix Park's military 'town' to get facelift fit for a Magazine", News, December 29th).
Growing up, the park was our playground as we lived nearby and spent most of our free time roaming its environs. The Fort itself was always a mysterious, seemingly impregnable structure and best left unexplored. Though I was hoping your Dublin editor would have found room to quote another famous Dubliner, Jonathan Swift, who in 1737 wrote: “Now here’s a proof of Irish sense/ Here Irish wit is seen/ When nothing’s left that’s worth defence/ We build a Magazine”. – Yours, etc,
