Christmas lights

Sir, – I walked around a Georgian residential area of Dublin the other evening. Many of the houses had illuminated their gardens, as well as the tall Christmas trees in the windows. They were beautiful but something was wrong. Then I realised that all of the trees, bar one, were festooned with white or pale yellow lights. There was no colour. I do not know if this is an austere declaration of a social pinnacle reached or a mere fashion but surely some coloured lights would add to the atmosphere? As for the abomination of flashing lights, the only sentiment they declare is prevarication. – Yours, etc,

EUGENE TANNAM,

Dublin 24.
