LOST LAWN AT LEINSTER HOUSE

SHEILA KANE,

SHEILA KANE,

Sir, - With reference to Consuelo O'Connor's letter of June 17th, permit me also to congratulate the Office of Public Works architects on the successful inclusion of a fine modern design in the historic environs of the houses of the Oireachtas.

Might I enquire of the OPW as to when it is proposed to return the surface of Leinster Lawn to its grassed condition? At the inception of work on the new building project a "temporary" car park was laid to make space available for the contract operations. It is my recollection that this was to be removed on completion of the works, now over a year ago.

This lawn not only provided an elegant setting to the east front of Leinster House but was an amenity enjoyed by the people of Dublin when the Royal Dublin Society occupied the premises and earlier in the ownership of the Dukes of Leinster.

Today's security problems may no longer permit such public access, but the city deserves better than the current exhibition of cars and blacktop. - Yours, etc.,
