Sir, - Despite a long protest by residents and politicians and the spending of hard-collected funds, permission was given to demolish four fine old family houses in this area.
The houses, complete with tennis court, orchard, shrubs and most of the trees were bulldozed to build 32 small living units in the same space.
Despite concerned comments by Frank McDonald and others, the so called "green belts" are being destroyed by what seems to be a frenzy of flat building and infill developments. Gardens and, in some cases, areas that should be developed as public space or parks are being built on. Not all these developments are bad, but is it not time to revise the planning system not only in our already congested city but in the threatened parts of rural Ireland?
We all want a healthy economy, but not at the expense of the destruction of our fragile and unique environment. - Yours, etc.,
