Sir, – The admirable cry of the businessman who told the banks, “I refuse to let you force my children walk behind a hearse” (PriceWatch, December 13th) is a lesson that we all need to learn.

Even in the midst of the Celtic Tiger, children were dropped off a 6am collected again at 7pm or later as we strove to keep the tiger sated. The weekend was spent doing chores we were too tired to do on week nights.

My friends look shocked as I tried to point out their quality of life left much to be desired. Weren’t these the good times with a brand new Merc in the drive, ready to sit in traffic for four hours?

There are other refusals we should take on board, and explain to the Government: I refuse to let you avoid the traffic I have to sit in. I refuse to take a cut while your salary is 10 times mine. I refuse to pay pensions to those who destroyed our State. I refuse to let you bypass the services I have to deal with. I refuse to let you pass on my hard earned money to those who’ve never earned a penny of it.
