Madam, – I take it that limitations of space prevented Gerry Lyne from mentioning in his excellent article (Irishman’s Diary, April 2nd) that the man who took Pearse’s surrender, Brigadier Lowe, later emigrated to the US and became the well-known actor John Loder.

One assumes that Lowe’s politeness to Pearse and “extraordinary courtesy” towards Elizabeth O’Farrell were what is nowadays called “communication skills” that stood him in good stead in Hollywood at a time when film directors were looking for excessively polished English actors like George Sanders. – Yours, etc,
