For whom the road tolls

A chara, – The solution to the problem of toll charges and rental cars, which may well deter Michael W Donahue (August 28th) from ever visiting again, is simple. All rental cars should have an e-toll tag. Each driver pays the charges on returning the car. Problem solved. – Is mise,

Sir, – It’s not only tourists who can be caught out by boothless motorway tolls. It’s an iniquitous system and I’m surprised it’s legal. Has it been challenged in court? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Michael Donahue considers the method used to collect tolls in Ireland to be “utterly ridiculous”, particularly for tourists. He makes a valid point.

While driving around Portugal in 2015, it was compulsory to register a credit card at an automated facility adjacent to my first encounter with a toll barrier. It was possible thereafter to sail through all tolled areas without worry or stress. If eFlow (the tolling brand name of the Emovis company) installed ATM registration points at airports and ferry terminals, surely this would simplify matters. – Yours, etc,
