Madam, – Now that the tumult is abating, I would appreciate it if a reader well versed in lexicography and the Irish language, would give an indication of the proper pronunciation of the title Fine Gael.

By and large, RTÉ commentators and newscasters have pronounced it as Fine “goh-whale”. In school days (Decies Territory), we were taught to call it as Fine “gale”.

Then again, one hears of Fine “fine weather” Gael. We were instructed to pronounce it as “feenah” Gale. I would appreciate some well-founded and expert advice on this matter, so that we can set a true course for the future. – Yours, etc,
