Sir, - The death in New Ross of Fr Sean Fortune by his own hand while awaiting trial for paedophile offences raises again questions that cry out for answers.
Could his death have been prevented? What help did he get from his Church?
Where does his death leave his victims, especially those who stood up to be counted? How will they be vindicated now?
Why was he allowed on the altar at public church ceremonies - a cause of scandal - long after his indictment?
Were diocesan funds used to pay debts incurred by him?
Why did it take criminal prosecutions to bring the activities over many years of Fr Fortune and his colleagues into the light?
What mechanisms are there in the Church to deal with complaints against clergy?
These and other questions about affairs in the diocese of Ferns have been debated many times.
Will someone in authority arrange for an independent inquiry covering the period of the happenings in question to be held - and publish its findings?
Those conducting the inquiry should have access to the facts that would enable them to include in their report the answers that were promised by the Bishop of Ferns to his people back in February, 1996.
This should be done so that knowledge may bring understanding, and understanding forgiveness; and for the encouragement of those priests and people who have remained faithful. - Yours, etc., Eleanor Doyle,
Latimerstown, Wexford.
