Electing Dublin's mayor

Madam, - The announcement by Minister for the Environment John Gormley that he wishes to see a directly elected mayor of Dublin is indeed most welcome. However, his decision to delay the change until 2011 is not.

If Minister Gormley really wants to see this change implemented all he has to do is ask Noel Dempsey about those very positive sections of the Local Government Act of 2000 containing such a provision. He could then move further along the Cabinet table and seek advice from Minister Martin Cullen, who reversed that legislation.

Finally he could seek the advice of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern who, incredibly, presided over both decisions. - Yours, etc,

Cllr DERMOT LACEY, Beech Hill Drive, Dublin 4.
