1. We have insane regulations which allow apprentice drivers to roam free-range about the place, learning-as-they-go (or not!), with the all too inevitable consequences for themselves and others.

2. We have "experienced" drivers with many miles of motoring under their belts, so to speak, adopting either complacent or arrogant attitudes to such things as speed limits and road markings. We might be surprised at how much we have still to learn - or how much we have forgotten.

3. There is a lack of ongoing, unrelenting, high-profile traffic policing.

As a daily commuter from Kildare to Dublin on the N7, I can assure you that I would welcome a very visible police presence to deter (and punish) the selfish, dangerous idiots who turn the daily drive to and from work into an ordeal for the rest of us.

It is going to take brave, uncompromising action from politicians and police authorities to inject sanity into the learner-driver situation, and to find what ever resources are necessary to deploy full-time highway patrol units.
