Dangerous Bridge At Slane

Sir, - I am knocked for six by the double standards of the Taoiseach

Sir, - I am knocked for six by the double standards of the Taoiseach. As we are all sadly aware, there has been terrible loss of life because of traffic conditions at Slane Bridge. Yet no action has been taken to remedy the situation. However, we may soon see "emergency" legislation being rushed through the Oireachtas to permit a second U2 concert there.By what warped morality does a perceived need for a second pop concert supersede emergency measures to alleviate a real crisis at Slane Bridge? The Taoiseach's actions constitute populism gone mad, and are an affront to the integrity of our Parliament and all called by the people to serve there. As a TD for Meath, and Minister for the Environment and Local Government (with responsibility for our road infrastructure) Mr Noel Dempsey is being negligent in his duties by endorsing these proposals. Both Mr Ahern and Mr Dempsey are fully aware of the need for emergency action to save lives at Slane Bridge, where many fatal accidents have taken place because of the particular road conditions there, especially in the last 12 months. Human life desserves greater urgency than rock concerts. This whole fiasco raises grave concerns about where our priorities as a civilised society really lie. - Yours, etc., Sean McKiernan Jnr, Virginia Road, Bailieborough, Co Cavan.
