Sir, - Whilst David Trimble blames everybody from Tony Blair to Gerry Adams for the failure of the current phase of the peace process, may I remind Mr Trimble what caused the failure?

The failure so far has been caused by the UUP reneging on its agreement with the other parties concerning the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, that all parties including Sinn Fein would form the Executive, kick-start the institutions and then the IRA would begin decommissioning.

Mr Trimble also states that the IRA have never stated their intentions on decommissioning. This contradicts a statement made by Padraic Wilson (leader of the IRA Inmates in the Maze), that he "could envisage some decommissioning once the Assembly was up and running."

Mr Trimble, along with the Conservative Party, have prevaricated since August 1994 and preceding this period, John Major misled his parliament over the secret IRA negotiations preceding the first ceasefire. Recently both Jeffrey Donaldson and Alex Maskey, in a TV debate, agreed that Mr Trimble agreed in principle to set up the Executive and start the institutions and the IRA at a later stage would start to decommission. - Yours, etc., Colm Nolan,
