Sir, – The public is only too aware of the extent of the expressed compassion shared by all members of the Dáil for the marginalised, disadvantaged poor people of Ireland. Addressing these unfortunate people, An Taoiseach in particular, emphasised in saying: it is not your fault.

The greatest deprivation contained in the Budget is, possibly, the cruel cut in the fuel allowance. Poor, frail elderly people will not be able to remain warm in the weeks ahead. Nevertheless, our Dáil representatives, leftwing and otherwise, will sit in the Dáil, well fed, “well oiled” at times, but always warm.

As a mark of solidarity with our wretched cold elders, I would suggest to our Dáil members that Leinster House be left without heat during March. They should try a sip of their own medicine. – Yours, etc,
