Sir, - In her Irishwoman's Diary of July 24th, Eileen Battersby described the deteriorating condition of the Curragh of Kildare, and referred to the recently published SRUNA report on the plain. The entire Curragh plains have been declared a recorded monument under the National Monuments Act, 1994. A report on the inter-departmental task force on the future management and development of the Curragh of Kildare, published in May 1999, made urgent recommendations to remedy the degraded state of the plain. (Copies are available from the Secretary General, Department of Defence, Parkgate, Dublin.)

Would the secretary-general issue a statement on his Department's intentions in this regard? - Yours, etc.,

Elizabeth Connelly, Hon. Secretary, County Kildare Archaeological Society, Newbridge, Co Kildare.
