Sir, – It was hard to pass over Page 2 without being struck by the stunning photograph (Domnick Walsh, Eye Focus, August 3rd) of a huge fish strung up by its tail fin with a fishermen alongside in a trophy like pose. The accompanying text explained that the fish was an Atlantic giant bluefin tuna that had been caught by fishermen from Dingle. The article further outlined that the endangered bluefin species had declined by 80 per cent in the past three decades and that the catch would only make a couple of hundred euro in local fish factories.

I could not help concluding that it was pointless removing this magnificent jewel of nature from its ocean ecosystem and that Irish fishermen were actively contributing to its extinction. – Yours, etc,
