Sir, – In December 2010 a letter from me was published in this paper after the carer’s allowance was cut for the second time. I explained, from personal experience, how difficult the lives of family carers can be as we make our huge contribution to our society, often with little or no support. I asked that we value our family carers and be prepared to defend them should they continue to be targeted.

The situation described by Mary Marmion O’Sullivan (May 23rd) is not only stark and terrible: it is immoral. When I wrote the 2010 letter, I would not have believed that a government of which the Labour Party was a component would stand over this continuing torment of our fellow citizens. The closing sentences of your second Editorial (“Protecting the elderly”, May 25th) are timely; and I agree with every word written by John Leahy (Letters May 25th) save only that I have never voted for Fine Gael.

I have been waiting for the Letters page to fill with angry letters in response to Ms Marmion O’Sullivan’s plight: perhaps they are in the post? – Yours, etc,
