Sir, – William Reville tells us that "Soviet communists pioneered cancel culture" ("West in danger of repeating Soviet ideological assault on science", Science, August 19th).
I fear he is mistaken. The Roman Catholic Church pioneered cancel culture, in the form of excommunication, long before anyone ever dreamed of Soviet communism. The organisation which brought us bell, book and candle – not to mention the Inquisition – is not inclined to relinquish ideological control of education either. – Yours, etc,
