EU military expenditure

Sir, – The EU is committed to spending €7.9 billion on military expenditure between 20121 and 2027. It is spending over €2 billion a year in the Sahel region of Africa.

After 20 years, the US, its EU allies, including over 200 members of the Irish Defence Forces serving directly under Nato command, and the UK, have withdrawn their troops from Afghanistan.

Does it ever occur to the rulers of the EU states that, while perpetual war is very good for the arms industry, they should be spending money on housing and the health system in Europe instead?

Or do we have to wait 20 years before the EU leaves the Sahel region? – Yours, etc,
