Madam, - John McManus, in a piece "Business slow to condemn Ahern's actions" (Business Opinion, December 18th), asserts, without producing a shred of supporting evidence, that "few who have succeeded in business have done so without some bending of the rules".

Whatever prejudices your newspaper may have in relation to current events, and however contemptuous your Business Editor may be of "those bodies that claim to speak on behalf of business", this particular assertion is an outrageous and scurrilous generalisation that cannot be left unchallenged.

It is gratuitously insulting to the law-abiding, tax-paying and job-creating business community of this city and this country. - Yours, etc,
