Sir, - Does John Bruton realise how reckless was his statement "A vote for Sinn Fein is a vote for IRA violence"? Is he saying that almost 16 per cent voted for IRA violence in the North last May? If not, why is he using such a weak tactic as muddying the issue?
Our politicians must speak carefully if they are not to add to the sectarian divide, a divide so in need of healing, not mud slinging, if tragedies such as the attempted murder of Alice Collins are to be avoided. We plead with John Bruton to abhor all violence, even to go so far as to try and understand where it is coming from, and to give credence to people who pull back from violence. - Yours, etc.,
