Sir, – May I add my support to naming the new bridge after Maeve Binchy. Dublin has recently been honoured with the title of the Unesco City of Literature and it would be a fitting recognition of Dublin-born Maeve’s rich contribution to Irish Literature to include her name alongside that of James Joyce, Samuel Beckett and Seán O’Casey, all of whom have had bridges in the city named after them.
In addition, her name would break the tradition of naming all the bridges between Heuston Station and the East Link after men! – Yours, etc,
Sir, – I think we have finally arrived at the moment where we can name the new bridge over the Liffey: the Binchy Bridge. Maeve Binchy appealed to and was loved by both Northsiders and Southsiders. But more than that, she was a person who understood and could write about our uniqueness as a race.
What a great tribute it would be to her talent. – Yours, etc,
