A name for new Liffey bridge

Sir, – Charlie Haughey Bridge. Temple Bar and the Financial Centre are just two of his visionary rejuvenation projects.

The name might not be too popular among the “chattering classes” but he actually got things moving and will eventually be recognised as one our great modern taoisigh. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – In relation to naming the new Liffey bridge at Marlborough Street (An Irishman’s Diary, May 19th), I would like to toss the name of my late brother, Tony Gregory TD, into the ring.

Tony championed the cause of inner city Dublin for over a quarter of a century as a city councillor until the ending of the dual mandate, and for 27 years as a TD, until his untimely death in 2009.

He championed the cause of urban regeneration in the Marlborough Street area and in the docklands and fought for the rights of street traders of the “Molly Malone” tradition – not to mention his struggle to rid the city centre of the scourge of heroin.

Tony also sat on the Dublin Port and Docks board, for whom his father also worked as a labourer.

The Tony Gregory Bridge would be a nice counter-balance to the Frank Sherwin Bridge further up the Liffey, or maybe the bridge could simply be named the Gregory Bridge, as I know Tony would love to share it with Lady Gregory, whose beloved Abbey Theatre stands near the foot of the new bridge. – Yours, etc,

NOEL GREGORY,

Sackville Gardens,

Dublin 3.
