Sir, – Frank McNally wonders who will pay for a centenary statue to commemorate Brian O’Nolan (An Irishman’s Diary, September 22nd).

In the spirit of O’Nolan’s fascination with the number three, might I make three suggestions?

First, in memory of their greatest columnist, Myles na gCopaleen, The Irish Timesmight consider setting up a public fund to help erect a permanent monument in Dublin. Second, O'Nolan's alma mater, UCD, might wish to contribute something to this fundraising effort. Third, O'Nolan worked as a civil servant for many years at the Department of Local Government, and that department, along with Dublin City Council, might like to do their bit as well.

Once a fund is established, I have no doubt that the Plain People of Ireland will do the rest. – Yours, etc,
