Is it time to review how Garda drivers are licensed?

Concerns raised over use of personal driving licences in official duties

Sir, – I was astounded to hear that members of An Garda Síochána have been driving their official vehicles on personal driving licences.

During my lengthy service in the Defence Forces, including some years as a military police officer, I was issued with an AF154, which was a military driving permit, given to candidates who successfully underwent an approved driving course and passed a subsequent driving test.

For decades, I had assumed that something similar applied to members of our national police force.

Is it not high time that this matter be resolved in the national interest? – Yours, etc,
