Sir, – Allow me to be the first to say “I told you so” over the Galway ring road. After the inevitable cost and time overruns there will eventually be a chorus asking: “Why hasn’t it solved the traffic problem?”
The reason it won’t solve the perpetual gridlock in Galway city is that a significant cause of the problem has not been correctly identified. Even with a ring road, people will want to drive into the city centre and will have to continue to put up with inconsiderate driving habits such as ignoring red lights, stopping in yellow-hatched areas at junctions, parking illegally, refusing at all costs to let buses out into traffic, etc.
I lived in Galway for some years and you just have to walk around the city, which is also often the fastest way to travel, to see what the actual causes of the gridlock are. – Yours, etc,
Anthony Moran,
