Sir, – We are due to participate in the play-offs for the 2026 Fifa World Cup later this month, a competition that is due to start within 100 days.
One has to wonder if there will even be a World Cup, given the amount of conflicts raging in the world at present. Should it go ahead in the US, given its role in precipitating the latest conflict in the Middle East?
I wouldn’t hold my breath in expectation that Fifa will ask Canada and Mexico to go it alone, but perhaps that is what they should be considering. That, or cancelling altogether, if things escalate into a global energy and economic crisis.
I say this as someone who has watched every World Cup since the 1974 instalment, and would dearly love for 2026 to go ahead without being overshadowed by events elsewhere. – Yours, etc,
