Harris reshuffles the deck

Cabinet changes

Sir, – Listening to the anxiety in Cork after the withdrawal of Simon Coveney from his ministry, the anxiety is about representation from Cork or Kerry or any other part of the country (“Fine Gael junior ministers vie for promotion”, News, April 3rd).

With so many Fine Gael TDs stepping down, I would presume qualifications for the jobs in any ministry are the priority, no matter where the TDs are from. Does having a minister from a particular county or province mean special treatment for those areas of the country? Surely not? Or am I being naive? – Yours, etc,

Cork.

Sir, – Opposition parties and others are calling for a general election. Sinn Féin says the electorate should be given the opportunity to “pass judgment” on Fine Gael regarding its time in office.

I would have thought that the number of Fine Gael TDs jumping ship ahead of an election would have been judgment enough. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Simon Coveney said he knew Simon Harris had been “struggling” with the decision as to who to have in his Cabinet since becoming leader of Fine Gael (News, April 2nd).

As a sailing man, Mr Coveney would know that it isn’t a good omen when a captain is struggling with his choice of deckhands! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Simon Coveney was a superb minister for foreign affairs and worked effectively in all his ministries.

I will leave any perceived failures to the usual naysayers. – Yours, etc,

MARGARET LEE,
