Schools and driving lessons

Essential life-skill

Sir, – I read with interest Una Mullally’s column on road safety (“There have been more road deaths so far this year than in all of 2022. Something’s badly wrong”, Opinion & Analysis, November 6th). While I agree with her about getting the message out more and her assertion that embedding road safety messaging further in schools enables children to bring those lessons into adulthood, I don’t agree with her saying that it doesn’t mean demanding every young person leaves secondary with their driving licence. I think that it is imperative that all children should leave secondary school with a driving licence. Driving is ubiquitous and the poor public transport system means that it will continue to be so. We are letting our children down by not educating them in this essential life-skill they will require as adults. – Yours, etc,
