A chara, – It’s good to hear that Tánaiste Micheál Martin expressed a commitment to fighting anti-Semitism during his recent visit to Israel. The question does arise as to why, during his meeting with Mahmoud Abbas, he didn’t raise the regular anti-Jewish outbursts of the Palestinian president (“EU and US criticise Palestinian president’s remarks on Holocaust”, World, September 7th). Two weeks ago, Mr Abbas blamed European ant-Semitism on Jews, claiming it was “because of their role in society, which had to do with usury, money, and so on”. As with all forms of racism, confronting anti-Semitism means challenging anti-Semites. – Is mise,
