Sir, – With reference to Paul Clements’s Irishman’s Diary (August 1st), I enjoyed a visit to Rathlin Island last May. As we left for the ferry, the sculpture of the Swans of Coole on the promenade at Ballycastle reminded us of the wonderful folklore and mythology surrounding the area. After a visit to the bird sanctuary and the “upside down lighthouse”, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch surrounded by the gorse and hawthorn wearing their Sunday best. Although it was a clear day, we couldn’t see the Mull of Kintyre from which Robert the Bruce is said to have sailed but neither did we happen on any spiders! All in all, a day to remember! – Yours, etc,
SHEILA SMITH,
