Midges and the great outdoors

A wee problem

Sir, – Emer McLysaght’s Irish ankles are not the only attraction to mosquitoes and midges (“Ouch! Why am I always the main attraction at the mosquito buffet?”, Life, May 26th). Queen Victoria was forced to abandon a Highland picnic in 1872 after being “half devoured” by midges. She actually encouraged smoking in Balmoral to deter them. – Yours, etc,

Armagh.
