Sir, – Letter writers have debated President Michael D Higgins’s recent criticism of Government economic policy as obsessed with economic growth (May 3rd, 4th). However, they have not pointed out that the role of President in Ireland is essentially non-political. Criticising Government policy and hosting an openly left-wing political think-tank like Tasc is far outside the scope of his office, not just because it is openly political but it is also partisan. President Higgins holds his office for all citizens but it is a racing certainty he will never host a reception for a conservative group such as the Iona Institute at the Áras. Of course Michael D Higgins is entitled to criticise Government economic policy – but as a private citizen, not as President. – Yours, etc,
DONAL McGRATH,
Greystones,
Co Wicklow.
