Agriculture and climate crisis

The national herd is growing

Sir, – Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, China, Libya, Jordan, Israel and Iran. What do all these countries have in common? They are all destinations for the “overflow” of Irish livestock from our expanding dairy industry. The blatant disregard by this Government for both sentient animals and the environment is breathtaking.

Under the watch of this Government, the national herd is growing and emissions are rising. Perhaps the Paris Climate Agreement does not apply to Irish agriculture?

We can cycle to work, reduce energy, and stop burning fossil fuels, but the giant elephant in the room is Irish agriculture, particularly the dairy sector, and needs to be urgently addressed. – Yours, etc,

JOAN LEDDIN,

Cork.
