How the service would be distributed around State

Western Health Board: Main breast-cancer unit at University Hospital, Galway

Western Health Board: Main breast-cancer unit at University Hospital, Galway. Surgeons from Castlebar encouraged to contribute to the Galway unit, and their sessions at Castlebar will be covered while they are working in the breast unit.

North Western Health Board: Main unit at Sligo to cover Sligo, Leitrim, west Cavan and part of Mayo. Not enough volume of breast-cancer patients to justify a unit at Letterkenny, but a formal cross-Border link with Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry proposed.

Midwestern Health Board: One breast-cancer unit at Limerick Regional Hospital. Surgeons from Nenagh, Ennis and Limerick have already come together to provide the service.

North Eastern Health Board: Single breast-cancer unit at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Midland Health Board: A new breast unit for Tullamore General Hospital. Despite the existence of a long-established unit at Portlaoise, "there is concern that the peripheral location of Portlaoise in the health board might militate against achieving the critical mass of patients required for the unit", the report says.

South Eastern Health Board: The board has already ratified a decision to provide a breast-cancer unit at Waterford Regional Hospital.

Southern Health Board: The report recommends two units, both in Cork city. These would be located at Cork University Hospital and the South Infirmary. This suggests there is no future for the unit at Tralee General Hospital, although the report acknowledges "the expertise that exists in Tralee".

Eastern Regional Health Authority: The report recommends two units on the north side of the city and three units on the south side. These would be at the Mater, Beaumont, St Vincent's, St James's and Tallaght Hospitals. James Connolly Memorial Hospital would lose out in this scenario.
