Mexico City - More than 1,000 Zapatista rebel supporters left Mexico City yesterday for the Chiapas mountains after a week of disappointing talks with the government.

The 1,111 Zapatistas, who represented communities allied with the rebels, arrived in the capital on Friday for their first visit since their January 1st, 1994, uprising. The government turned down their demands by arguing that autonomy for Maya Indian communities would threaten Mexico's sovereignty.
