Oil major YUKOS said today it had filed for bankruptcy protection in a US court and would seek an order from the court to halt the December 19th auction by the Russian state of its main production unit.

"The steps we took today were done as a last resort to preserve the rights of our shareholders, employees and customers," chief executive Mr Steven Theede said in a statement.

"Unfortunately, we believe it was the only resort left for us."
