SCIENCE:TWO FORMER BT Young Scientist winners from Cork have also proved to be winners in their Leaving results. Both scored strongly in the sciences and mathematics and both plan to study science and engineering in university.

Richie O’Shea (18), was outright Young Scientist winner at last January’s exhibition. The student from Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Blarney did research into low-cost, tin-can cooking stoves for use in developing countries and then developed his own prototype.

He will represent Ireland next month at the EU Young Scientist competition, but will go knowing he achieved an A1 in physics and chemistry and an A2 in higher-level maths, with a points total reaching 575.

Aisling Judge won the competition in 2006 aged just 14, the youngest winner on record. Her project involved the development of specialised food packaging that could warn the purchaser of any spoilage inside the pack without it having to be opened.
