Louis de Paor, of Oughterard, Co Galway, is the first writer in Irish to receive a major Us literary prize, the £5,000 O'Shaughnessy award. The award for poetry was established in 1997 to honour Lawrence O'Shaughnessy, a trustee of the University of Thomas in St Paul, Minesota.
