Two women were held hostage as part of a major robbery of post office money by dissident republicans in Northern Ireland today.

It was the latest in a series of similar-type raids in Strabane, Co. Tyrone. The pair held captive in their flat at Lower Main Street, where they were confronted by three armed and masked men around 1.30am.

Later one of them was told to go to the sub post office at Melmont on the Strabane-Omagh Road where she worked and take a substantial amount of cash. The other was taken across the border into Co Donegal.

The woman who removed the money was then taken by taxi just over the border at Clady to a church car park off the Castlefin Road at Doneyloop where one of the gang was waiting.

Her flatmate was later released, and although neither was hurt, police said both were left traumatised by the incident.
